Pierce Update #6 (Good News!)
Hello all,
Getting right to it, as Vicki mentioned previously, since my last update we found out that the “blasts,” or the leukemic cells in her blood, have dropped to 7 from when she started, when her count was in the mid 20’s. The doctors anticipate the possibility that they may drop to 0 and thus be in full remission by the end of this week, but even if not, this is a wonderful sign of progress.
The additional great news is that the transplant team informed us Vicki was a complete marrow match for donation. Finding a donor can often be the most difficult part of the whole process, and this news has been met with great excitement. The road to transplant is still being traveled, but it’s good to know that when we get there some significant pieces of the puzzle will be present.
Mom has developed an infection in her blood again, which is quite serious on its own, but is being managed well. Along with the pneumonia, both must be completely dealt with before any next steps are taken involving the leukemia.
She has been very optimistic, especially having seen Vicki and our friends Ren, Julia and Andrew, who have visited. Ren brought with him a hand stitched quilt from his girlfriends mother, which was met with great affection. Julia and Andrew both stayed for a while and provided company and friendship, notably, when mom had Julia cut her hair, which they both enjoyed quite humorously. Our friend Hannah played her violin in the room during Vicki’s visit and will again soon, we hope. Many others, including the doctors, nurses and other staff, have played a role in helping the quality of our experience in Houston remain high.
Thank you again for all the well wishes.
I look forward to providing more positive news soon!
Best,
Pierce
