The Wrestler – “Things That Comfort Me I Drive Away”

I just finished seeing “The Wrestler.”  I was fortunate enough to attend a private viewing of it early this morning.  To be honest, my life has been so busy lately that I didn’t even know about this movie even though the actor won best actor in a drama just recently.  It had just not come up on my radar so when I got the last minute invitation, I had to look at a quick preview on the internet to even be a bit aware of it before I went.

I’d heard Bruce Springsteen sing the theme song. It was poignant and descriptive of the main character.  It talks about a man that spent most of his life driving away the things that comfort him in his life.  It talks about the frustration and hopelessness of a man who “punches nothing but the breeze” and describes himself as a trick poney, a one legged dog, “a one legged man trying to dance his way free.”

My first thought was, why?  My second thought was, I see.  I see.

It’s about life.  It’s a strong dose of reality.

I recommend an adult only audience for this movie. It is R rated and there are lots of “R” scenes.  All that said, it is not just for the music I suggest it but for the awesome way it so accurately depicts life in the depths of despair when times don’t get better and how, sometime, the efforts to straighten out one’s life doesn’t always work out.

My wish for you today is that you never get to the point in your life that you drive away the things that comfort you. If you see someone who depicts that, lend them a hand when you can.
