Shine on Harvest Moon

I know you are humming that song right now if you remember it.  Yesterday morning, I was humming it, too.

I walk on the Lake Murray Dam at seven each morning with a friend.  Yesterday morning the moon was big and full…shining strongly on the lovely calm waters.  We both noticed that it was not there in that same position the morning before and figured it might have something to do with the Autumn Equinox.

History has it that the full moon nearest to the Autumn Equinox is called the ‘Harvest Moon’. This is because for several nights it appears large and bright in the early evening, bringing farmers valuable extra time to gather in their harvest.

I know one thing, yesterday morning it gave the fishermen plenty of light to help them with their fishing. It was so bright that for almost that whole hour it was brighter than the sun…at least to the naked eye.

Seeing that moon makes me think that fall is coming fast, the leaves will soon be changing, and I need to go to the fair one more time before it leaves town.  It also makes me think I need to start planning a camping trip to my favorite log cabin in Boone, NC before they close for the season.

It’s not long before I walk this morning.  I can’t wait to see if the moon is there again.

My wish for you today is that you take a glimpse at that moon if you get a chance to.  Savor the moment while you can and hum that little tune – Shine on Harvest Moon.
