Flocking to the Fair

I love this time of year.  The air is getting cooler.  The mornings are brisk.  The fair is coming.

It starts today at three.  I am lucky enough to live in town and not too terribly far away from the fairgrounds…not quite close enough to hear the sounds or smell the cotton candy and elephant ears, but just close enough to be able to drive there in less than 30 minutes.  Going several times will definitely be an option for me.

I like to go with different friends that span generations.  When you do that, you get to experience it from a variety of views.  Going with young friends, we get to see how many rides we can squeeze in and how many “prizes” we can win.  Woo woo!

I have one friend that loves to ride the tilt-o-whirl – my FAVORITE ride.  I hope I get a chance to go with her.  We can ride over and over again.

Then there are my more “mature” friends that like to see the cakes, crafts, have a lemonade and watch people.  I love to watch people, too, and to go see the art exhibit.

When I was younger I entered my artwork in the fair. One of the years I entered my carefully constructed collage - Time Travels – I won not only a first place ribbon but the overall first place in the amateur division.  I still like to see what creativity is shared in the crafts and art sections. One of my friends just found out the items she knitted won a first place and a good many second place awards this year.  We will go and view those and celebrate her victory.

I also enjoy to go with my, now 25 year old, son.  He loves it all…and doesn’t mind riding the double ferris wheel with me.  Since I have been scared of heights in my younger days and have gradually made myself get over that through the years, he likes to ride with me and – only occasionally – will taunt me a bit by gently shaking the seat. I have to admit I enjoy having him with me at the fair when he can make it.

I also look forward to going with someone I have never been with before.  I savor the experience of going with someone different so I can see the sights and sounds from that person’s perspective.  Not sure who that will be this year yet, but I can’t wait to see.

Of course, each year our fair seems to bring the rains we need.  This year looks like no exception.  They are calling for the rain to start this afternoon and go all the way through the weekend.

You just have to smile when that happens.

My wish for you today is that you find yourself taking time to smell the smells, see the sites, and maybe even spin in the tilt-o-whirl a couple of times when the fair comes to town.  After all, it’s a tradition that brings out the silly pants in a great many of us and takes us into a frivolous and carefree stage…if but for only a moment.
