Buford: A Man’s Best Friend

The first time I visited I saw Buford with his master, Marshall.  They were some of the first we met there on main street in the cowboy town of Possum Trot, Tennessee.

Just watching, you could tell they were good buddies.  They walked side by side and seemed to go together.  There was lots of love between the two of them.

The other dogs in town accepted Buford without hesitation.  He had canine buddies there, too, as well as the other men, women and children that spoke to him like he was part of the family.

I’ve seen lots of men with faithful canine companions in my lifetime.  Not taking anything away from a relationship between a man and a woman … but a man’s dog will be there to listen all the time no matter what.  They don’t talk back, they love you through thick and thin, they can be good traveling companions, they don’t ask for much in return…just a little food/water, and some lovin.

Buford and Marshall were the ultimate team.  They were a perfect example of what a man and his dog should be.  They loved living.  Marshall showed us what it took to have a loving family member like Buford.

Buford died last week.

I suspect it will be hard for Marshall not to have Buford around.  I also know that Marshall will show us by his example what it is like to carry on without his buddy and to show what one does when one loses someone special.

My wish for you today is that you have the opportunity to have a faithful friend like Buford at least once in your lifetime. Thanks for showing us how it’s done, Marshall. We love you.
