Watching Sunsets

It was warmer these past few days so my walking buddy and I decided to grab a late afternoon walk.  The soccer fields are a perfect place for us to meet.  After all, they are well lighted, full of people, and have great walking paths around the complex.

The sun was setting with clouds beginning to stream in from the distance. All of a sudden the celestial blues and whites became purples and pinks, then red, then orange.  Paths of bright colors filled the sky as pink formed on the underbelly of the cotton candy like clouds.  It was a spectacular site.

We continued to walk forward with our backs to the sunset, but I found myself turning often to catch the view.  Our conversations quickly went to night skys and how awesome a clear night sky is when there are no artificial lights and you can see the stars clearly. Since I live in the city I don’t see those kind of night skies often and I explained how envious I was that he was able to walk right outside his house and see them from his country home.

It quickly reminded me of one of my favorite things to do when I visit my family in the mountains of Wales.  I will go out on a frigid night, enjoy the clear view of the stars and fill my lungs with the cool crisp night air.  Our nights don’t get that cold and the stars don’t look nearly as close to earth in SC as they do in the mountains of Wales, but the feeling is the same.

For me, that experience puts life in perspective.  It makes you know that while you are but a small part of the bigger picture each of us makes up the whole…just like each little star makes up the beautiful night sky.

Late today, long after I walked with another friend around four, my walking buddy called and asked if I saw the sunset today.  It was another beautiful site as he walked that path around the soccer field.

As I think of those in my life who enjoy a sunset, a gentle rain, a good conversation, it reminds me that I enjoy surrounding myself with those who see the glass half full instead of half empty.  I appreciate the fact that there of those of us who can stop and take in a beautiful sky during the day and at night and reflect on what really is important.  I appreciate there are those of us who are bold enough to share moments like that with those they care about.

My wish for you today is that you enjoy nature’s scenery whenever you can.  Take a deep breath and refocus your energies by seeing the glass half full instead of half empty.  It will make a great deal of difference in your outlook on life.
