Just Singing in the…Snow!

I got the call about 8:15 p.m.

“Look out the window.  It’s snowing like cats and dogs here.” The voice on the other end of the phone said.

I was excited.  I mean, after all, there is little snow in our part of the world and when we do have it we think we’ve died and gone to heaven.I ran to the door with the cellphone in my hand as I continued to talk and there was no snow.  It was just bitter cold and windy.

“ No snow here.”  I said.  “Darn, and I was in hopes I would see some and make a snowball or two.”

“Come on over. We’ll have a bottle of wine and sit on the porch watching the snowfall.” Said the sincere voice.

I had my pajamas on already and it was 30 minutes away to my friend’s house.

However, the invitation was too tempting so I quickly dressed in warm clothes and headed out.  Within minutes of my getting on I-20 going toward Aiken the snow began.

In 10 minutes I was slowing down with all the other drivers thinking twice about getting out in this.  However, always looking for an adventure, I continued, got off on the exit 15 minutes later and headed down the frontage road where absolutely no cars had been since the snow began.  I made it over the slick bridge and onto the snow-covered driveway at my friend’s home.

The wine bottle cork made that familiar pop as I entered the opened front door.  Christmas trees still up, it felt like stepping back to a month ago where Christmas was in the air.  I hummed “It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas” and we laughed.  A quick drink of wine and we were out on the porch gathering snow for a snowball or two and watching the big flakes dance in the air.

It was great to share that with a friend. By the time we drank the whole bottle and sat for awhile talking, it was much too late and too dangerous for me to drive so I stayed there…not to mention that I had way too much to drink to be driving even in good weather so I settled in for a long winter’s night.

By morning the snowman was gone and most of the snow was melted.  Just the good memories of a fun evening remained.

My wish for you today is that you make the best of situations when you find yourself in them.  Be safe, of course, but take advantage of the time to be spontaneous and you’ll have even more fun in life!
