Coming of Age Day
It’s ironic that Coming of Age Day is today. You see, my son turned 25 today. Â
One of the most significant changes for him is that his car insurance goes down to almost half of what it was yesterday. Â
Funny how one day makes a difference. Â
For our family, the Coming of Age Day is even more significant.Â
Nine of us celebrated his birthday on Saturday. Sunday I drove him to Charlotte to catch a plane to New York City. He will likely be gone for four months or more because he took the opportunity to work on a documentary film full-time with some colleagues there at Pratt Institute.Â
“ We know you will miss him. This will be an adjustment for you.†my friends and family said over the last few days. Â
His decision came quickly but not without great thought. He tied up his last minute activities, said goodbyes to friends, and within these last few days prepared for a new adventure. Â
It’s what every wise parent wants for their child…an opportunity to venture out on their own for new experiences…new adventures. Â
Therefore I am happy. Happy for him that he has the chance to experience New York City with friends and colleagues. Happy for me that we got him this far…knowing he has lived this dream to be ready to fly away and do what he loves best.Â
My wish for you today is that you have a chance to venture out to do what you love to do and that you help others do the same. There is great satisfaction knowing you’ve had a positive impact on someone else’s’ life as they sprout their wings and fly as they “Come of Age.â€
