Isn’t She Lovely?

Stevie Wonder sings “Isn’t She Lovely?”  It’s a song about a baby, but most of us would think of it as a song about a lovely woman.

When is the last time you truly saw a lovely woman?

Over these past few weeks our family has been dealing with an illness with one of our dearest family members…our mother.

When you love your mother like we do and she becomes ill, life stands still.  At 84, my mother has lived a full life.  She has survived a war where she lived from day to day wondering if a bomb would drop on her house. She has birthed five children, three who lived. She has had a good life with the husband of her choice and has adjusted to his early death. She is, today, a good friend to many…both young and old.

When she got pneumonia, had a heart that went into uncontrolled rhythms, and started having blood sugar levels that were bottoming out and rising just as quickly it threw us all in survival mode.  The day before Thanksgiving she went to a rehab center.

She told me just the other day that her goal is to get out of there as quickly as possible.  Her condition improves daily and, you know, I think she just may be out shortly after regaining her strength.

While all this treatment has been going on she has had to put aside her vanity for recovery’s sake. My genteel mother has done that with grace and dignity.

She said to several of us that she was a mess when she looked in the mirror.  We all think she is lovely, and we help her brush that hair as well as possible until she can get a professional to fix it.

Truth be known, we are in awe of her and the daily efforts. The efforts she is making to strengthen her weakened body inspires us.

My wish for you today is that you pay special attention to elderly beauty.  It is truly a sight to behold.
