Will you still care…when I’m … 24, 44, 54?
I love that song the Beatles sang…When I’m 64.
When we are old we are medically cared for by Medicare. For many of us, that takes care of things…along with a supplement we may be able to afford to cover the rest.
When we are young, we are cared for by our parents and most of us get/got good medical care if we lived here in good ole America. Until most of us were out of school and got jobs on our own, we at least had some kind of medical care we could get it fairly inexpensively through our schools
As soon as we hit graduation, however, something happens.
Oh, if you are destitute or are able to qualify for Medicaid you are ok. Or if you are disabled or in some way unable to work you are taken care of. But there are MANY, MANY people who fall in-between those destitute families and the ones able to be covered by their employers who are just about out of luck when it comes to medical coverage. They often have to pay so much for so little that it’s almost as bad as not having any coverage at all.
It’s like no one loves you anymore as far as health insurance is concerned…particularly if you decide to use your creative talents to have your own small business.
Fact is, there are many small business owners out who have a modest income and who simply can not afford health insurance. They can’t be covered by Medicaid (and don’t want to be).
Then there are also those who have insurance and get sick just to have their insurance company cancel their policy on them. Oh, they say it is for something they may have not quite completed correctly on the application, but, the bottom line is, the company is losing money and all of a sudden their client becomes a liability.
I’m not sure what the answer is here, but I have a very good friend who works hard at a small business and simply can not get health insurance. This is a good man who works hard, is honest and contributes to the wellbeing of the town he lives in. He is a responsible individual, pays his bills on time, and is a respected citizen in the community.
This makes me mad…and it should be making others just as mad when it is obvious medical care costs are out spiraling of control.
My wish for you today is that you care about others who find themselves ruined by medical expenses or who chooses just not to get coverage at all suffers medically for it. If you become sick during these “in between†years, will anyone love and care for you without causing you to go into such debt you wished you were dead?
