Send me A Song

I had some friends over for dinner last night. As usual, I slipped on a favorite cd for some background music. One of the songs on the Celtic Women cd, Send me a Song, is one I enjoy often.

I had just shared that song with my son and his girlfriend the night before, too.

As I sat with my friends last night I realized one of them had something in common with my son’s girlfriend. They were both getting ready to head back to school soon.

Now that’s not so unusual for his girlfriend. It is, however, quite something for my dinner guest to be going back to college. She quit a great job several years ago to go to college fulltime.

There are some people willing to do that when they’re young. I even stayed out of college several years working until I decided I really wanted to go. My friend, however, will turn 50 this year…so she would have been 48 when she started the four year journey.

We are all so proud of her. After all, she is following her dream just like the young girl friend of my son’s who is in her early 20s.

In Send me a Song it tells about someone who is leaving a loved one to start a new adventure. It occurs to me there are many who are getting ready to send their loved ones off on a new journeys to college and jobs.

One section of the song is particularly appropriate here…not just for those leaving on new adventures but for those of us who stay behind and wish the best to loved ones going on a continuing journey. Let me share it with you…

“Don’t look back when you reach the new shore
Don’t forget what you’re leaving me for
Don’t forget when you’re missing me so
Love must never hold, never hold tight, but let go.”

My wish for you today is that you celebrate with those leaving to go off to college – or for that matter – any new adventure. Risk is often what makes life interesting. Embrace change with the hope for success and growth.
