The Gift
Jim Brickman wrote one of my favorite songs – The Gift. I first heard it at one the many concerts if his I have gone to. The lyrics are just about that…gifts that come to us free…many of which become our favorites.
I received one of those…well, actually two…in the past few days.
I went out to put an envelope in the mailbox early yesterday morning. As I opened the door I found a gift. It wasn’t the usually well wrapped gift a friend shares but a simple feather from my fine feathered friend the barn owl.
I picked it up and examined it. The fluffiness on the end was typical of it’s’ feathers.
Since I’ve been reading the last Harry Potter book and owls are also part of his life, I just laid the feather gently beside the book on my glass top table so I could enjoy it awhile before I put it in a small clear plastic bag and slip it into my latest memory book.
My son and his girlfriend came over last night for dinner and saw it. We enjoyed a few minutes of talking about that owl.
In the middle of the night I was awaken by animal fighting sounds in my front yard. I jumped out of bed and peered out the window in time to see the Owl and the Pussycat (Ms. Kitty) fighting for some kind of varmint. The barn owl won the prize and quickly flew off with it.
I’m glad these two are in my yard. I’m not sure what it was they were fighting over but it is one less critter I have to deal with that might scare the willies out of me if I see it.
I just hope the owl doesn’t leave the leftovers on my front porch like that feather!
My wish for you today is that you be aware of your surroundings and appreciate the wild and domesticated animals you may find along your path.
