Dinner with the Purple Martins

I’d been looking forward to Saturday eveningsteve-packing-in-apt-battery-visit-on-lake-with-argentieris-055.jpg all week. After all, there was an opportunity to go out with friends on their boat at Lake Murray. We planned to have dinner on the boat and go out to an island where a wonderful event occurs this time of year.

The purple martins come to an island in the middle of Lake Murray every year about this time. The flock by the thousands, though no one has really ever been able to count them. They find a spot on the trees of this small island, only to flock off and spin around in the air in a tornado like whirl for several hours right before sunset and settling there for the night.

These birds, apparently on their way between Florida and Canada, have discovered this little stopover. The island has been carefully reserved for them.

It was a beautiful evening with a cool breeze and a fantastic sunset. The food was great. The friends were gracious and fun to be with. What a great evening to celebrate friendship and nature.

My wish for you today is that you enjoy nature whenever you can. Take a picnic along and savor those friendships and family events when you can.
