It Must Be July 4th

It seems that every July 4th the same thing happens.

For many of us, that means celebrations with family and friends and lots of watermelon.

This year I celebrate the 4th in Charleston.

For the past ten years – at least for many of those years – another strange phenomenon has occurred.

The air conditioner has gone out either in the car, the house or wherever I am around this holiday.

This year was no exception. Yesterday, in the midst of helping pack the belongings of my sweetheart to move, the air conditioner went out. Even though it happened very early in the morning, we were unable to get it fixed, so here I am, once again, living in no AC for the 4th.

I’m writing this article in the dark at 5:54 a.m. The ceiling fan is running on high above my head and the birds have begun to sing. It’s getting light outside and the sky is clear. I just finished a bowl of couscous. Its 64 right now with a promise of 89 before the day is out…and clear…perfect for a July 4th.

We were going to have a little get together here but changed those plans after the AC went out. We will be going to someone else’s home after checking to make sure there is AC there…at least until I get there…then, it’s anyone’s guess. I have not told them my story of the air conditioner blues on July 4h. Perhaps that will be one of the topics of conversation today.

Most of the time there has been only one incident of AC being out at one time.

Hopefully, this will not be the year I sent a new “AC out” record!

It really is amazing that air conditioning has become such a staple in everyday living here. I remember as a child that we were fine with everyday summer living in the upper part of SC.

So, to all of you who are living comfortably reading this in your nicely air conditioned place, be glad you have what you need to feel comfortable on this 4th… and watch out for me around this time of year.

My wish for you today is that you enjoy your holiday with family and/or friends and find comfort wherever you are.
