The Lighthouse

When my sister and I were teenagers we loved to sing a song called The Lighthouse. It was a Christian based duet about a lighthouse and also about that light leading you down the right path.

So what kind of light sources have lead you safely through the night in your life?

I am first reminded of the night lights as a child. We put them out so our little ones would be able to see in the dark. I still have them interspersed in various locations of my house so I can see in the night if I need to move around without falling all over myself.

One “beacon” that stands out in my mind is the one at Lake Junaluska, NC. The story is told of the train engineers who went through that sleepy little mountainous area during the night. They would look forward to seeing the lit cross; located on top of the highest peak at the Lake even in the densest fog. It has now become a permanent fixture of the area for both locals and tourists in the area.

This week I saw another amazing beacon that hails the ships coming into Charleston’s port. The lighthouse at Sullivan’s Island has been there since 1962 and marks the entrance to the Charleston harbor.

Of course, there are our heavenly beacons of light – the moon and stars – that have kept many a wayward sailor from running into things on the open water – not to mention showing them the way to land. There’s nothing more fun that going out into a dark field at night – throwing down a blanket – and watching the stars – even an occasional falling star or “meteorite” pass by.

That full moon last night was magnificent to watch out over the ocean…or from wherever you happened to be in-between thunderstorms.

Yes, it is these simple, and very often natural sources of light that awake our soul and stir our inner being.

My wish for you today is that you savor the moments when you discover or rediscover the beacons of light in your life. They are sure to bring a smile to your face and a gleam in your eyes.
