Yesterday was Carolina Day in South Carolina.
For many of us, the first thing that comes to mind when we see this is our dear Gamecocks.
Since we look for any reason to celebrate…
USC sports, this would seem appropriate…a day set aside just for our Gamecocks.
Wrong.
For those of us, many of whom are our young children who many have just studies SC history last school year, this is a day to celebrate our heritage.
Yesterday was no exception.

Fort
Moultrie, one of our fine national parks located on Sullivan’s Island near
Charleston, was in a day of celebration with many programs focusing on
Carolina Day.It all began in the mid 1700s when a young soldier named William Moultrie began a

political career.
He became well-known as a man “who had a large interest in the welfare
of our country†and was most instrumental in defending
South
Carolina during the Revolutionary War.It was on June 28, 1776 when he and his colleagues successfully defended
Charleston against the invading British soldiers.
This was THE first successful battle to ward off the British…thus making history as
Carolina Day.
We attended a reenactment and program celebrating Moultrie’s life and contributions to South Carolina as a military man and politician who helped to get us where we are in
South Carolina now.
My wish for you today is that you explore the history of the fair state you live in often and participate in the celebrations of historical milestones with your family and friends.
