The Watermelon Crawl

I love watermelons.

They now are making the kinds that are seedless.

What are they thinking?

Part of the fun…

of eating watermelon on a hot day is to see how far you can spit the seeds…yes, a seed spitting contest of sorts.

Last night on the way home from walking with a friend I heard a song on the radio called “The Watermelon Crawl.” The song reminded me of how much fun watermelons can be.

Not only can you spit seeds, but there are festivals – like the one they just had in Hampton, SC last week – that are named for watermelons.

Then, there are all the foo foos that have watermelon designs on them. And heaven forbid if you are a Southern woman and haven’t seen a watermelon pocketbook or dress with the luscious fruit somewhere in your past.

This time of year there are watermelon farms where people make a decent living picking and packing the things. I’ve heard of many a romance blossoming at the watermelon patch.

Yes watermelons are a way of life in the South. Its part of being a true blue Southern and it’s pretty healthy for you, too.

Can’t say that about all our Southern ways.

My wish for you today is that you enjoy a good watermelon sometime this summer while they are in season here. There’s just nothing better than a Southern grown watermelon. They are SO tasty and are sure to cause some good fellowship and action packed seed spitting contests. Who knows, you may find love, too, when eating a watermelon…or, at the least, do the watermelon crawl with your friends!
