Just Ducky

So I was talking on the phone the other day with a friend who was outside sitting in the porch swing when a group of ducks came waddling down the street. It’s not unusual to see ducks there in that North Charleston area since a well manicured pond is nearby.

What is less noticeable, at least until that day, is that the ducks have a mating season defined by obvious friskiness on the part of the male ducks and a less than encouraging demeanor of the female ones.

Ok. I suspect you guys are grinning at this comment…and, quite frankly so are you girls. Sounds similar to us, in some respects, except our season is all year long!

My friend began describing the antics of the ducks and that there were several males attracted to the same female.

“I wonder how the female knows which one is the daddy duck?” He said.

“I suspect she has an instinct about that.” I replied.

Later that same day I was bringing my mother back home to her place in Columbia after a little ride in the country. Low and behold there was a group of ducks up from the pond at the front of her door.

They were involved in the same activity.

Pretty soon I suspect we will be seeing two ducks protecting a nest near her door – just like last year about this time…that is once things are sorted out and the daddy duck starts protecting the mother-to-be and her nest.

My wish for you today is that you take the time to be aware of what nature’s cycles are and do your best to protect that process as much as possible. Then you can enjoy the little ones, from a distance of course, when they arrive.
