Rolling on the River

I often am reminded of a song that has something to do with experiences surrounding me. Credence Clearwater Revival’s Proud Mary is the song I thought of this time. If you don’t remember anything else about that song…you will remember some of the words that go like this…”left a good job in the city, working for the man every night and day…rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.” Proud Mary is a song about working hard but really not seeing life at it’s fullest until you ride on the river.

I camped with nine friends this past weekend. Most of us were going rafting down the New River, nestled between two mountains near Beckley, West Virginia. Others of us just went for the camping.

Though I was not one of the rafters, I had the unique experience if seeing them prepare the night before with an exceptional “fireside meal by George” and watch them in the video when they returned the next afternoon.

Now this was no calm, peaceful ride. It was full of level four and five rapids that bordered on level six. Let’s just say it was not for the weak of heart.

Since I didn’t go rafting, several of us decided to go to the national forestry office and venture down by the river west-virginia-camping-trip-with-singles-in-june-2007-009.jpgto see some of the rapids from the sidelines. The trip on those winding roads – many of which were narrow one way paths through the dense forest – was amazing. It had to be at least 10 degrees cooler there than at our campsite.

The best part of the trip was the comradery with both old and new friends. We consumed a “few” bottles of wine in those two nights we were there. We had some good stories to tell…many of which were shared by apparent “expert” storytellers. The weather was perfect and the campfire was soothing. We even learned how to cook a mouthwatering omelet in a Ziploc bag!

Credence Clearwater Revival was right when they suggested that things are clearer on the water.

Yes, it was a good weekend. Next year we go to Tennessee to find whitewaters there.

My wish for you today is that you experience life to the fullest possible extent…going on adventures with both new and old friends whenever you can. You’ll likely be glad you did.
