Crossing the Delaware
I’ve been crossing the Delaware River over and over again this past week. I suspect it’s sort of like crossing the Savannah River between SC and Georgia if you live nearby there and go across to shop or work.
Many of the people living in this area commute daily. Of course, they go by car like most of us.
But what if you lived during George Washington’s time and found yourself going over by boat to do your job?
That’s exactly what he did there one Christmas on his way to the Battle of Trenton.
You’ve seen pictures of him standing in a stately position in a boat while his men oared from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. It’s actually not a very wide river at the point of “Washington’s Crossing.†A quaint township, it has a lovely river path you can walk as you visit houses and fields still maintained from Washington’s days. We stopped to see women – adorned in clothing from that period – weaving, cooking, and talking about life during that time.
I could almost see the settlers strolling up and down the paths with their families as they went from place to place.
There was a boathouse where replicas of the boat Washington sailed
on were kept. The crafts were small compared to many we know of today. They weren’t at all like those huge clipper ships I saw recently in Charleston. Just a basic – get me across to the other side – boat.
The community was wrapped up in the history of that moment. We had a pleasant meal at the Washington Inn and reflected on those
times before we went across the river and headed back home.
My wish for you today is that you discover what’s across the river whenever you can. You may just discover a new adventure awaits you.
