“Well, Here’s Another Nice Mess You’ve Gotten Me Into!â€
I was reminded this past week of a famous saying from the 1933 Laurel and Hardy movie “Sons of the Desert.†The saying was “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into!â€
You see, I decided to do my laundry. I had four loads that had to be washed so I took them to wash while I was in Charleston. I could do all of them at one time there and get them washed and dried in two hours…as opposed to taking all day for the four loads at home.
Of course, I put them in four washers, loaded the soap powder and slipped the coins in all four loads. Confident that the wash would be done within the next 45 minutes, I turned around just to discover that the dryers were broken with a note saying they would be fixed sometime soon.
In a bit of a panic, knowing that the laundry would mildew if I didn’t dry it, I thought about what to do next.
“Well, this is another nice mess you’ve gotten yourself into.†I said with a smirk.
I thought I remembered a coin laundry down the street a bit, so I got in the car and went in search of it. Sure enough, there it was and it seemed all the dryers were free. 45 minutes later I could be seen taking those clean, wet clothes into the laundromat.
I have to admit it has been over 30 years since I walked in one. It was clean enough and, after I got the things loaded in the dryer, I decided to read the paper and work on my laptop while the clothes were drying.
After awhile, someone else came in a little harried. Seems her car had stopped running at the car wash across the street and she was flustered a bit. It didn’t take long to strike up a conversation with her and, before long, we discovered we had friends in common.
Imagine that – friends in common in Columbia and we were in Charleston. The more we talked the more we realized our lives had come very close to crossing years ago while she lived nearby me with her family.
It was great to kill some time talking. Since I love to talk and it seemed she did as well, the time passed more quickly. Before we knew it we were both done and on our way.
Maybe I didn’t get myself into such a mess after all.
My wish for you today is that you monitor and adjust when life takes an unexpected turn. Life will be more pleasant when we just get a grip and deal with the little unexpected challenges we find ourselves in from time to time. Who knows…you may even meet someone interesting along the way.
