It’s a song of hope and encouragement – something we all need a little more of. The words are SO powerful that you simply must get a copy of the song for your collection.

On September 12, 2006 I began writing a daily reflection on my new website. As I wrote the first one, I was contemplating what to say as a closer and decided to end it with “My Wish for you today is…” It’s a way to summarize what the main focus is of the reflection. For those of you who read my reflections, you know that’s what I say at the end of each one.

On my way back to Columbia late Saturday night I heard the song again. It came on at a very good time. When I listen to country music that often happens.

I had been pushing myself to the limit trying to cover all my bases five days with a very busy weekend, a good personal life with the man I loved (my college sweetheart from 30 years ago!), and the release of my first book.

Things were pretty stretched and very intense at times.

Usually I handle these sorts of situations pretty well but this time was different. Looking back on it, it was just too much for any one person to be doing and my stress level was at the max. I had set myself up for trouble and was too involved to realize it.

So, after several incidents occurred, I decided it was time for me to leave an event that we all had been looking forward to. After all, if you’re not having fun anymore and you can’t get beyond that, it’s time to step back. There’s just no need ruining anyone else’s time.

On the two hour drive home late that night, I heard “My Wish” and began singing along. The drive gave me time to try to settle down. The words were just what I needed to hear…from a person I loved would have been better…but since that was not the case…a country song would just have to do.

The singers say that “they hope your worries are small and you never have to carry more than you can hold.”

I have learned a number of things from those five days. The most important one is that I will never put myself in that kind of stress again. It’s just not worth it and it can change your life faster than anything.

Other thoughts in the song say “if you’re faced with a choice and you have to choose, I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.” That didn’t happen for me that night and I can’t tell you how that feels here other than to say it’s a very lonely and hurtful feeling not to be supported when you are in the midst of a situation where you feel you need support.

So how am I handling all this?

Life goes on and it will continue to whether I stay stuck in one place or not. You seek supportive and loving comfort where you can get it and, as the song says;” …you help somebody every chance you get, Oh, you find God’s grace, in every mistake, and always give more than you take.”

I am resolute that this website – www.reflectionsfromacountrygirl.com – will serve as a source of inspiration and hope to others who read it. From my experiences, and those of others that I hear verbally and through songs, I hope you will find something useful here as you walk life’s path.

With this in mind, I will end this reflection by quoting the last verse of the song – “My Wish.”

“My wish for you” today “is that this life becomes all that you want it to, your dreams stay big, your worries stay small, you never need to carry more than you can hold, and while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to, I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things, too. Yeah, this is my wish.”

~ Joellen

I was so excited when I heard the country song “My Wish” on the radio for the first time.
