{"id":670,"date":"2009-10-19T22:05:16","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T02:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reflectionsfromacountrygirl.com\/?p=670"},"modified":"2009-10-19T22:05:53","modified_gmt":"2009-10-20T02:05:53","slug":"galveston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectionsfromacountrygirl.com\/?p=670","title":{"rendered":"Galveston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">There are those of us who remember Glen Campbell singing the love song \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Galveston.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 I remember the song, but really did not know much about Galveston &#8211; at least until last year when Hurricane Ike hit there and destroyed much of it.\u00c2\u00a0 All I remember seeing left of Galveston on the news was the Wendy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sign &#8211; still standing after the hours of beating the coast took. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Back in 1995 my son, mother, and my Aunt Mary from Wales took a trip around the country.\u00c2\u00a0 I think I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m the reason they no longer have unlimited mileage on vans.\u00c2\u00a0 We put 8500 miles on a rental van in 30 days.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the places we went was to Galveston for my birthday meal on July 27th. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We ate at Landry\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Seafood back then.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">I have been living in Texas since mid May getting treatment at the cancer center in Houston.\u00c2\u00a0 I have been to Minute Maid stadium to watch a pro baseball game and to several local museums as I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve felt like it.\u00c2\u00a0 I really had forgotten that Galveston was so close to Houston, that is, until this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">My sister came in for a surprise visit.\u00c2\u00a0 After a six hour transfusion we decided to go to Kemah &#8211; located near the Gulf Coast at the recommendation of a friend who went with us.\u00c2\u00a0 We passed NASA on the way and spent a great deal of time along the boardwalk in Kemah.\u00c2\u00a0 It was in the 70\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and perfect weather for doing that.\u00c2\u00a0 The gentle breezes blew in from the Gulf as we enjoyed watching the fishermen and feeding the catfish with my leftover crackers from lunch. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We then decided to go to Galveston &#8211; some 20 miles away.\u00c2\u00a0 Pierce had been there several times with friends.\u00c2\u00a0 He wanted to show us how it had been built back up and &#8211; perhaps have dinner on the island. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We took the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153 Pierce tour\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of Galveston.\u00c2\u00a0 It was obvious much of it had been rebuilt, at least on the main street right.\u00c2\u00a0 Vicki had never been on the Gulf Coast so it was all new to her.
