Recently I wrote about Buford.\u00c2\u00a0 He was my friend\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s basset hound that had been a constant and faithful companion for years.\u00c2\u00a0 He was tragically hit by a car and killed suddenly. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

My friend was devastated.\u00c2\u00a0 Actually, devastated was not an adequate enough way to describe it.\u00c2\u00a0 He has been down since then.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Many of you know how hard it is to adjust to a family loss. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no way around it being a tough time.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In the middle of the night last night I got an e-mail from my friend.\u00c2\u00a0 I heard the e-mail come in with the usual little \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ding\u00e2\u20ac\u009d on my cellphone.\u00c2\u00a0 I had been awakened by the owls outside my window so I turned on the light and read the e-mail.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It was long.\u00c2\u00a0 My friend had been up searching the internet for a basset hound…not to replace Buford…but because he had so much love to share with a canine friend that he could not stand being without one.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He told me about a basset hound rescue shelter in Charleston and asked if I could check it out for him…that he had seen a few bassets that interested him and wanted to know if the place was reputable.\u00c2\u00a0 I shot a quick e-mail to him saying I would be happy to check it out and have spent a good deal of time today doing just that.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I have been awaiting a call from the shelter as well as several friends who could tell me if the place was on the up and up so I could report back to him.\u00c2\u00a0 We have exchanged e-mails on and off all day as we progressed.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I just got the most exciting e-mail from him a minute ago. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems his daughter and son – now grown and on their own – decided to find a little boy basset hound for him as a father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s day present.\u00c2\u00a0 She had just brought it in.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know if they totally understand what they have done.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure he can express verbally what their actions mean to him right now. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Totally awesome is what I said when I wrote back.<\/span><\/p>\n

What a fantastic father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s day present.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

My wish for you today<\/em><\/strong> is that you, also, can be as sensitive and intuitive as his children have been to him.\u00c2\u00a0 Let it be a lesson to all of us that we should make it our business to be aware of what friends and family need.\u00c2\u00a0 I will be a better person after hearing what his children did.\u00c2\u00a0 I have been inspired. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
