{"id":511,"date":"2008-03-18T08:21:17","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T12:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reflectionsfromacountrygirl.com\/?p=511"},"modified":"2008-03-18T08:21:17","modified_gmt":"2008-03-18T12:21:17","slug":"the-beat-goes-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectionsfromacountrygirl.com\/?p=511","title":{"rendered":"The Beat Goes On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Sonny and Cher performed this hit back in the 1960s.\u00c2\u00a0 As they were on the rise to stardom they had some roadblocks.\u00c2\u00a0 Separation, divorce, going their separate ways to become successes in different fields.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, as their song says, the beat went on for them and they survived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">I thought of them recently.\u00c2\u00a0 Since I completed a four year major project in October as a new \u00e2\u20ac\u0153retiree\u00e2\u20ac\u009d life has had lots new experiences.\u00c2\u00a0 Some good.\u00c2\u00a0 Some bad.\u00c2\u00a0 Some that caused me to make choices of using my time other than writing my usual short reflections I love to pen. \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Life happens and it sure has been doing that in my neck of the woods.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">An ailing mother who died two weeks ago, a brother with a brain aneurism in a coma, adjustments to being fully retired, and my son turning 25 and leaving for NYC the day before that momentous birthday to follow his dreams all added to the experience.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We have been going through Mom\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s things this past week and moving them out of her vacant apartment to their new homes. There were things we fondly remember.\u00c2\u00a0 There were things we had never seen.\u00c2\u00a0 There are pictures of people we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">There are things that make us reflect. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We found our mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s silver serving spoon she brought with her from Wales after WWII to start a new life with my father, RC.\u00c2\u00a0 It was tarnished.\u00c2\u00a0 I polished it up and it looks like new, just like the German Swastika belt buckle my father brought back from his years as a soldier. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Then there were the thermometers in a penlike case of my country doctor grandfather.\u00c2\u00a0 He died before the war while my father was in college.\u00c2\u00a0 They came with a note from a cousin to my mother years later that she was returning them to the rightful family members.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Nearby was a bill he had handwritten to someone he treated.\u00c2\u00a0 He wrote a dollar amount on that bill, but further down it said any item\/items or goods would be accepted as payment.\u00c2\u00a0 I remember my grandmother saying they got lots of poultry, farm goods and tobacco as payment back then. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Included in the treasures we found were three of my father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s old pipes and one of the sweater vests Mom made for him that he loved to wear.\u00c2\u00a0 I still remember him sitting on the porch with that sweater vest on and smoking his pipe.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">There was a birthstone mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ring we kids had given to her one Mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day.\u00c2\u00a0 It had not been worn recently because her fingers were riddled with arthritis but she loved it dearly.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">We smiled as we uncovered several brass love spoons from her homeland.\u00c2\u00a0 Her apartment was adorned with many of them.\u00c2\u00a0 These were some she was likely saving to give away one day to someone special. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">There were many finished afghans, needlepoint items and dish clothes she made when she was feeling better.\u00c2\u00a0 These were the few she had not given to others in kind gestures of friendship or love. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">There were many other items we cherish. One final treasure I will mention here. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Most of you know I wrote a book called <strong><em>Sardines, Cheese and Soda Crackers<\/em><\/strong> that includes 63 true short stories about growing up in South Carolina.\u00c2\u00a0 The title of the book is actually one of the stories.\u00c2\u00a0 It tells about favorite times with my father in which we had Mom\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s packed lunch that consisted of sardines, cheese and crackers.\u00c2\u00a0 I mention in that story of cutting the block of cheese with my father\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pocketknife. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Yes, I found the knife. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Not sure why my mother kept it all these years.\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been dead since 1988.\u00c2\u00a0 It shows the wear of salt water on the blades and part of the wooden handle has worn off. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">She was a big part of my life when I was writing these stories.\u00c2\u00a0 She never mentioned she had that knife even when I chose that story as the title of the book.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure she ever remembered keeping it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">I have the knife sitting by my computer now.\u00c2\u00a0 Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just say that it inspires me to begin writing again.\u00c2\u00a0 There are still many stories to tell. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">Yes, the beat goes on. \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; min-height: 14px; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal Helvetica; margin: 0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">~ Joellen<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sonny and Cher performed this hit back in the 1960s.\u00c2\u00a0 As they were on the rise to stardom they had some roadblocks.\u00c2\u00a0 Separation, divorce, going their separate ways to become successes in different fields.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, as their song says, the beat went on for them and they survived.
