What makes a good teacher?\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I suspect we all have experienced at least one good teacher in our lifetime.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>After all, each of us had that teacher\/student experience and we probably figured out what was good about the process…even if we were home schooled. <\/font><\/p>\n

I have had the privilege to work with thousands of teachers and to see many of them in action.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Not that this makes me an expert, mind you.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>But I’ve also talked to many more students who are not scared to say what they like about their teachers.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/font>Here is my list of characteristics of the exceptional teachers I know personally or have come in contact with or heard about through my life.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It’s probably not far from yours.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Feel free to add a few more if you find I missed some. <\/font><\/span><\/font>Exceptional teachers are:<\/font><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

1.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>knowledgeable and passionate about the subject(s) they teach. <\/font><\/p>\n

2.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>confident when it comes to using their knowledge to spark the pleasure of learning in each and every student that walks into their classroom.<\/font><\/p>\n

3.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those that welcome constructive criticism on their quest for becoming a better teacher. <\/font><\/p>\n

4.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>experts in knowing how to manage a classroom full of energy – both positive and negative.<\/font><\/p>\n

5.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those people who NEVER stop learning. <\/font><\/p>\n

6.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those that collaborate with and learn from fellow teachers and colleagues and ALWAYS look for opportunities to uplift the school community.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

7.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>risktakers.<\/font><\/p>\n

8.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those who show a love for all students\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>– but particularly the ones that need an extra boost.<\/font><\/p>\n

.9.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those who spot a troubled child a mile away and who make sure that child knows they are there for them.<\/font><\/p>\n

10.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those who exude a positive, can do personality when surrounded by the doubting Thomas’ of the world…but who embrace those people as full of positive possibilities, too. <\/font><\/p>\n

11.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>problem solvers. <\/font><\/p>\n

12.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those who NEVER give up on any<\/strong> student.<\/font><\/p>\n

13.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those that students seek out, visit with in the classroom, and come back to see after graduation.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

14.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>those who get a letter from a student years later thanking the teacher for hanging in there with them when no one else did.<\/font><\/p>\n

15.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>don’t expect anything extra in return for their efforts but who deserve it on a daily basis. <\/font><\/p>\n

16.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Worth their weight in gold.<\/p>\n

I know several of these.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Do you? One is my sister. I just wish there were more out there that fit this description.<\/p>\n

My wish for you today<\/strong> is that you have known many of these in your lifetime.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>If you fit this category then my wish for you today<\/strong> is that you keep up the good work and spread your passion to others.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>If you are a teacher still striving to become exceptional,<\/strong> my wish for you today<\/strong> is that you strive to become like the person described above.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We need more of you out there.
