Funny, I thought. Her tail was straight up so I really must have scared her.

I decided to go out on the deck to give her a morning pet. She always greets me with a purr and meow and wants too be petted just a bit if I have time.

To my surprise, on the deck, it was not “Miss Kitty’s” tail I had seen but a raccoon with her babies hanging on for dear life!

She was walking right toward me. I quickly realized if I did not announce myself she would walk right across my feet so I said in a matter of fact voice…”And who have you brought to see me so early in the morning?”

That was enough to send her scurrying away from the deck and around the side of the house…all while the cat….who had already sized her up from the patio table top she was sitting on…was watching every move she made.

I was concerned only briefly that Miss Kitty may pounce on that little family…but she seemed content to watch silently as the raccoon and her babies moved along.

I saw the raccoon later that morning and suspect she was just trying to find a place for the family to settle for awhile until the babies could become more independent.

…and I thought I lived in the city where no wild animals would dare to come.

Come to think of it, the barn owls are back again this year.

Maybe I live closer to the country than I think.

My wish for you today is that you respect the life of mothers and their young this time of year. It’s the season for babies of many wild species to be born. Letting them take care of their young without danger would be most respectful of you…even though there may be some inconveniences associated with that choice.

~ Joellen

Recently I sang for a “Picnic in the Park” event here in Columbia.
